Coalition for Women’s Voice

Background

On December 29, 2021, Ethiopia ratified the proclamation for the establishment of the Ethiopian National Dialogue Commission, Proclamation No. 1265/ 2021. This was done due to the country currently fractured by a simmering ethnic, political, and religious polarization as well as the ongoing armed conflicts that threaten the peace, security, and stability of the nation. Considering this reality of the nation, the national dialogue aims to build national consensus, sustainable peace, and reconciliation. In the past several years, national dialogues have become an increasingly common approach for conflict resolution and political transformation. Institutionally, the national dialogue is expected to convene to address a broad set of issues or problems and operate outside of the permanent organizations of government.

Who we are

The Coalition for Women’s Voice in the National Dialogue was established on 16 March 2022 representing 22 CSOs working for the advancement of women’s rights in Ethiopia. The aim of the Coalition is to ensure women’s meaningful representation in the Ethiopian National Dialogue process and to ensure that the process responds to and addresses Ethiopian women’s needs, perspectives, priorities, and aspirations. Within a year time, the coalition has over 50 member CSOs and operates with seven steering committee members, and a secretariat, i.e., TIMRAN. The Coalition team is accountable to the Steering Committee, the Secretariat and the Coalition itself since it is mandated to carry out the day-to-day activities of the Coalition.
